Welcome to our project page! As Miami’s first and only public university, a top-tier research institution and proud Hispanic-Serving Institution, Florida International University (FIU) has taken an unconventional route to improving degree completion in that our initiative is located in our foundational courses and co-lead by faculty. The Gateway Project responds to the well-established problem that the transition from high school to higher education is fraught with challenges, ones heightened for students from underserved backgrounds; and the fact that first-year student retention is highly correlated with graduation. By empowering faculty and varied stakeholders as partners in student success, supporting the redesign of 17 critical courses, and promoting evidence-based, learning-centered, and culturally-responsive instruction, the Gateway Project as resulted in up-to 40% increases in course pass rates, and improvements in 1st to 2nd year retention rate that far exceed those of our peer research universities.
